The Shenandoah Public Library will close early at 4 pm on Thursday, December 31, 2009 and remain closed through Friday, January 1, 2010. We will reopen Saturday, January 2 for our normal hours.

SCIA Coffee: Memories of the '30's

Tomorrow morning, Thurs. Nov. 19 at 10 am, the Shenandoah Public Library, Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum and Shenandoah High School Broadcasting will unveil the result of this summer's Memories of the '30's interviews. We'll have coffee and a chance preview some of our video and audio, plus the opportunity to meet some of the great people involved with this project. Hope to see you there!

Books Sandwiched In & Movie

Carrie Falk is the star of tomorrow's Books Sandwiched In. On Thursday, November 19 at noon, stop by the library auditorium with your lunch to hear about this year's All Iowa Reads: The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown. Then, at 1 pm, this month's Must See Movie will debut on our big screen: An American in Paris. You bring the audience and we'll provide the snacks!

If you are planning to take a test soon, the library may be able to help. We have free online practice tests and courses for many school and professional exams. Want to find out more? We are offering a class Sat. Nov. 14 at 11 am.

Library Closed Nov. 11 & 12

The Shenandoah Public Library will be closed on Wed., Nov. 11 in honor of Veteran's Day. We will also be closed until 6 pm on Thurs., Nov. 12 for bathroom remodeling. We will reopen from 6-9 pm on Thurs., Nov. 12. All books previously due the 12th will be extended to the 13th.

Are you getting your GED or going back to school and taking your ACT or ASVAB? The Shenandoah Public Library can help! We've got online practice tests to help you get ready for your next step. If you want to find out more, we're holding classes to show you how to access this great service. The classes will be November 13 at 9:30 am and November 14 at 11:00 am. Booksale opens Saturday!

Come one, come all, to the Friends of the Library Annual Booksale! Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at 10 am, the doors will open. Thousands of books, movies, CD's, and audiobooks will be offered for $0.25 each. Come see what treasures you can find!

This Thursday, October 15, the library will host "Books Sandwiched In," featuring Carrie Falk presenting this year's All Iowa Reads title: The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown. Come at noon with your lunch, and we'll provide the coffee and entertainment. This month's Must See Movie will not be held immediately after Books Sandwiched In as per usual, but will be held Tues. 1959, The Year Everything Changed

Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 - 3:30-5 pm - Come to the library during ShenFest to hear a discussion on the new book "1959, The Year Everything Changed" by Fred Kaplan. The panel includes Brenda (Fauss) Brummel, Bill Hovenden, and Leon Nicholls, moderated by Sandy Overbey, and will be held in the library auditorium. The public is invited to join with memories and commentary.

Storytime Friday morning

Miss Liz is back in business for the new school year with her monthly preschool storytimes. On Friday, Sept. 18 at 10 am, she invites children (and their parents) to come enjoy reading and fun activities in the Story Garden.

The Shenandoah Public Library would like to congratulate Harley Greenwalt on being named Grand Marshal of this year's ShenFest Parade. We would also like to thank him for sharing his memories of the 1930's with us earlier this summer. Books Sandwiched In and Must-See Movie

This Thursday the library has a great double feature. Books Sandwiched In starts at noon, and will feature Bill Overbey sharing a book of poetry he enjoyed. Then, stick around, because at one o'clock it's our Must-See Movie - this time it's Gregory Peck coming to our big screen in the timeless classic To Kill a Mockingbird. The show is free, and we'll even throw in free popcorn!

Are You Game? is back!

This Wednesday, September 16, 2009, the library will hold its first Are You Game? of the fall. Teens (7-12 grade) are invited to the north end of the library from 2-3 to play games, eat snacks and have fun. Are you game?

Casablanca - Thurs. 1 pm

Everyone is invited to the Shenandoah Public Library auditorium this Thursday, August 20th, at 1 pm for a screening of the classic film "Casablanca" on our big screen. The movie is free, and popcorn will be provided.

Book Discussion Wednesday night

Wednesday, August 12, 2009 - Stop by the library at 7 pm for an after-hours book discussion of "Little Heathens," the true recollections of an Iowan growing up in the 1930's. Jan Frank-de Ois will be hosting the discussion in conjunction with our Memories of the '30's project. The discussion will be held in the north end of the library. Call for Quilts

The Shenandoah Public Library and the Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum are co-sponsoring an exhibit on 1930's quilts. We are looking for area residents who are willing to lend us your quilts from that era for the exhibit, which will be on display at the museum from Sept. 8 through Oct. 2. Our Door is Open!

The Shenandoah Public Library is pleased to announce that our new door is open! After several days, the hardware has been installed and the new front door is now in service. Thank you to everyone who had patience while we were under construction and came in to see us the long way.

The Shenandoah Public Library is getting a new front door! Thanks to generous donations given to the Library Foundation, we were able to replace our old creaky door with a brand-new one. It's being installed today, Aug. 3, so patrons are asked to excuse our mess and enter the library through the back door to the children's area. If you have questions, you can call 712-246-2315.

July 31 - last day for points for Teen SRP

Today is the last day to earn points for the teen summer reading program. If you've been working your way toward your twenty, make sure to turn them in by 6 pm Friday, July 31!

Inkheart - Thurs. 7 pm

On Thurs., July 30th, 2009, the Shenandoah Public Library will be showing Inkheart on a big screen in the story garden in the children's department. All ages are welcome. The film will start promptly at 7 pm, and popcorn will be provided. Filmgoers may want to bring your own pillow or beanbag chair.

Singin' in the Rain - July 16

Get out your umbrellas and your dancing shoes! This Thursday, July 16, 2009 the Must See Movie will be the Gene Kelly musical classic Singin' in the Rain. Come see it at 1 pm on our big screen - popcorn is provided, and the movie is free!

Mudbound - Thurs. 7 pm

The Reading Club will be meeting this Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 7 pm in the north room of the Shenandoah Public Library to discuss Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. Stop in for a great time and lively discussion of this book and the difficult issues it addresses.

Miniature Horses & Friends

This week the Summer Reading Program will feature Chad Rutledge's miniature horses and possibly other interesting animal friends as well. Stop by the library at 1 pm on Wednesday, July 8 to check out the animals in our final kids' event of the summer.

Creative Feelings - Project Recovery Iowa - Wed.

Persian Pickle Club - Tonight!

At 7 pm tonight, June 25, 2009, the Shenandoah Public Library is hosting a book discussion on the Persian Pickle Club by Sandra Dallas, in conjunction with our 1930's oral history project this summer. Meet in the North Room of the library to find out what all the buzz is about!

Mad Mixture at the Summer Reading Program

On Wednesday, June 24th at 1:00 pm, the Grout Science Museum will be bringing us their "Mad Mixture" program. Kids of all ages are invited to see their exciting presentation, which we believe may involve giant kid-sized bubbles! It happened one... Friday afternoon

This week the Must-See Movie is on Friday. At 1 pm, come to the Shendandoah Public Library to see the classic film "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. The movie will be on our big screen and is free and open to the public, and popcorn will be provided!

Magic Thursday at the Library

Thursday, June 18th at the Shenandoah Public Library - Magician Rick Eugene will perform illusions and sleight of hand to the amazement of kids of all ages. The Magic show will begin at 1 pm. Then at 3 pm, Rick Eugene will teach a magic class open to older kids and teens (primarily going into 5th grade and above). To join the lesson, you need to sign up in advance and pay the $2 materials fee, which covers all the things you'll get to take home to amaze your families and friends. Stop in this Thursday to see something magical at your library!

Jason the Juggler - Wed. June 10

Kids of all ages are invited to the library Wednesday, June 10th at 1:00 pm to see Jason the Juggler perform his amazing feats of balance and skill and laugh at his crazy antics. Admission is free and open to the public. Brought to you by the Be Creative @ Your Library Summer Reading Program.

Hold onto your paintbrushes, folks! It's time for the Summer Reading Program. Sign up starts June 1 for both kids and teens. The theme for the kids this year (pre-school through going-into-grade-6) is Be Creative @ Your Library. Teens (going into grades 7-12) can sign up for PictionaRead to earn points and win prizes. Events for Grown-ups

The summer reading program for our younger patrons is almost here. However, before the kids get out of school, we've got two great events for our adult patrons scheduled this Thursday. First up is Books Sandwiched In at noon, where you can bring your lunch and listen to a review of The Soloist by Steve Lopez - the book that inspired the recent film of the same name. I highly recommend both the book and the event. At 1 pm, right after BSI, we invite you to stay for this month's Must-See Movie, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre starring Humphrey Bogart, on our big screen. We'll bring the popcorn! We hope to see you at one or both of these great programs.

LearningExpress Library has online practice tests, courses, and e-books for many standard tests, including ACT, ASVAB, GED, CDL, Nursing Entrance Exam, TOEFL, and many others. It also has courses to improve your job search, resume writing, and interviewing skills. Photo 101 - Lunch Learning @ the Library!

This week we have a special series of programs to share! Three digital photography experts have offered to share tips and tricks of their trade. Bring your lunch and your photography questions to the library auditorium! On Thursday, April 2, 2009 at noon, Bill LeVere will cover the basics. Lee Hayes will discuss framing and printing at noon on Friday, April 3, 2009. At 2 pm on Saturday, April 4, 2009, Mike Harvey will share his love of wildlife photography. All 3 workshops are free and open to the public, but we ask that participants sign up in advance at the library desk.

BSI & Must-See Movie

This month's Books Sandwiched In program will feature Judy Braymen sharing about Alexander McCall Smith's books. Drop in with your lunch and hear all about it Thursday, March 19 at noon! Then, at 1:00, you can stay for the March Must-See Movie - a John Wayne classic set in Ireland. The Quiet Man is free and open to the public - and the popcorn is on us.

Teens - Dueling DVD Duos

Teen Tech Week is almost here! Starting Monday come to the library to vote for your favorite DVD Duos. The library will purchase the top two winning duos. Book Lover's BINGO

It's back! Once again, we're playing Book Lover's BINGO at the library. Come in to pick up your BINGO card, then read books to match the categories between March 2 and April 17, 2009. This week's cozy Saturday will be Dominoes for Beginners. Lenny Drake will teach participants how to play Mexican Run dominoes, and then play will begin! Make sure to call ahead to sign up. The event starts Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 pm.

Cozy Saturdays

If you signed up for Beginning Knitting this week, make sure to come to the library auditorium at 2 pm for Sonya Jones's presentation. All of the slots are full for this week's program, but we still have openings for next week's "Dominoes for Beginners" with Lenny Drake. Call or visit the library to sign up for this fun event!

Dr. Zhivago - Must See Movie

Looking for a little Russian romance? On Thursday, Feb. 19th, 2009, the Must See Movie program will present Dr. Zhivago. The movie will start at 1 pm. This classic film tells a tale of tragic love in the frozen Siberian steppes. Snacks will be provided, but filmgoers are encouraged to bring cushions for the chairs.

The Roast with the Most!

On Saturday, Feb. 14, come learn how to reach the heart of that special someone with a special roast. The Fareway Meat Department will be offering a class we call Roasting 101 in the library auditorium at 2 pm as part of the Cozy Saturdays series. Samples will be provided, and everyone is welcome to attend. No registration necessary!

Cozy Saturday - Genealogy

There are still some slots available in Carolyn Steinbrink's Beginning Genealogy class, held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2009. This event kicks off our Cozy Saturdays series. Every Saturday in February, the library will offer a program designed to let you learn something as you while away the afternoon. Beginning Genealogy will show you how to start your family tree. Tax Forms and Info @ the library

Tax time is here again, and at the library we will do what we can to help you through it. We have the basic federal forms and the state long form on display. Many forms that we do not have on display we can print for you from the IRS website for $0.15/page. Check out the government links section of the Helpful links page for IRS websites and tax info. Librarians can't give tax advice, but we can give you forms, sympathy, and a smile.

Are You Game is back for the Spring semester! The first AYG of 2009 will be on January 28 from 2-3 pm. Teens are invited to enjoy games, snacks and fun in the north end of the library.

Even if you're not a teen, anyone who's game can come play Dominoes on Feb. 28th at 2 pm. during our Cozy Saturday afternoon! Sign up at the library desk anytime beforehand, because space is limited.

Mr. Smith Goes to Shenandoah Public Library

The January Must-See Movie will be Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Come to the library auditorium on Thursday, January 15th at 1 pm to see this classic film on our big screen. Snacks will be provided, but filmgoers are encouraged to bring their own cushions for the folding chairs.
