Closed for New Year's

The Shenandoah Public Library will close early at 4 pm on Thursday, December 31, 2009 and remain closed through Friday, January 1, 2010. We will reopen Saturday, January 2 for our normal hours.

SCIA Coffee: Memories of the '30's

Tomorrow morning, Thurs. Nov. 19 at 10 am, the Shenandoah Public Library, Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum and Shenandoah High School Broadcasting will unveil the result of this summer's Memories of the '30's interviews. We'll have coffee and a chance preview some of our video and audio, plus the opportunity to meet some of the great people involved with this project. Hope to see you there!

Books Sandwiched In & Movie

Carrie Falk is the star of tomorrow's Books Sandwiched In. On Thursday, November 19 at noon, stop by the library auditorium with your lunch to hear about this year's All Iowa Reads: The Rope Walk by Carrie Brown. The Shenandoah Public Library will be closed on Wed., Nov. 11 in honor of Veteran's Day. We will also be closed until 6 pm on Thurs., Nov. 12 for bathroom remodeling. We will reopen from 6-9 pm on Thurs., Nov. 12. All books previously due the 12th will be extended to the 13th.

Come one, come all, to the Friends of the Library Annual Booksale! Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at 10 am, the doors will open. Thousands of books, movies, CD's, and audiobooks will be offered for $0.25 each. Come see what treasures you can find!

Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 - 3:30-5 pm - Come to the library during ShenFest to hear a discussion on the new book "1959, The Year Everything Changed" by Fred Kaplan. The panel includes Brenda (Fauss) Brummel, Bill Hovenden, and Leon Nicholls, moderated by Sandy Overbey, and will be held in the library auditorium. The public is invited to join with memories and commentary.

Books Sandwiched In and Must-See Movie

This Thursday the library has a great double feature. Books Sandwiched In starts at noon, and will feature Bill Overbey sharing a book of poetry he enjoyed. Then, stick around, because at one o'clock it's our Must-See Movie - this time it's Gregory Peck coming to our big screen in the timeless classic To Kill a Mockingbird. The show is free, and we'll even throw in free popcorn!

Call for Quilts

The Shenandoah Public Library and the Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum are co-sponsoring an exhibit on 1930's quilts. We are looking for area residents who are willing to lend us your quilts from that era for the exhibit, which will be on display at the museum from Sept. 8 through Oct. 2. Our Door is Open!

The Shenandoah Public Library is pleased to announce that our new door is open! After several days, the hardware has been installed and the new front door is now in service. Thank you to everyone who had patience while we were under construction and came in to see us the long way.

Under construction!

The Shenandoah Public Library is getting a new front door! Thanks to generous donations given to the Library Foundation, we were able to replace our old creaky door with a brand-new one. It's being installed today, Aug. 3, so patrons are asked to excuse our mess and enter the library through the back door to the children's area. If you have questions, you can call 712-246-2315.

Inkheart - Thurs. 7 pm

On Thurs., July 30th, 2009, the Shenandoah Public Library will be showing Inkheart on a big screen in the story garden in the children's department. All ages are welcome. The film will start promptly at 7 pm, and popcorn will be provided. Filmgoers may want to bring your own pillow or beanbag chair.

Magic Thursday at the Library

Thursday, June 18th at the Shenandoah Public Library - Magician Rick Eugene will perform illusions and sleight of hand to the amazement of kids of all ages. The Magic show will begin at 1 pm. Then at 3 pm, Rick Eugene will teach a magic class open to older kids and teens (primarily going into 5th grade and above). To join the lesson, you need to sign up in advance and pay the $2 materials fee, which covers all the things you'll get to take home to amaze your families and friends. Stop in this Thursday to see something magical at your library!

Summer Reading Program - June 1!

Hold onto your paintbrushes, folks! It's time for the Summer Reading Program. Sign up starts June 1 for both kids and teens. Events for Grown-ups

The summer reading program for our younger patrons is almost here. However, before the kids get out of school, we've got two great events for our adult patrons scheduled this Thursday. First up is Books Sandwiched In at noon, where you can bring your lunch and listen to a review of The Soloist by Steve Lopez - the book that inspired the recent film of the same name. I highly recommend both the book and the event. At 1 pm, right after BSI, we invite you to stay for this month's Must-See Movie, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre starring Humphrey Bogart, on our big screen. We'll bring the popcorn! We hope to see you at one or both of these great programs.

The Shenandoah Public Library is pleased to announce that we now offer online test preparation through our website. LearningExpress Library has online practice tests, courses, and e-books for many standard tests, including ACT, ASVAB, GED, CDL, Nursing Entrance Exam, TOEFL, and many others. It also has courses to improve your job search, resume writing, and interviewing skills. To get started, simply click on the link on our main page (with the lightbulb) or go to our Online/Downloadable Content page and follow the instructions. Photo 101 - Lunch Learning @ the Library!

This week we have a special series of programs to share! Three digital photography experts have offered to share tips and tricks of their trade. Bring your lunch and your photography questions to the library auditorium! On Thursday, April 2, 2009 at noon, Bill LeVere will cover the basics. Lee Hayes will discuss framing and printing at noon on Friday, April 3, 2009. At 2 pm on Saturday, April 4, 2009, Mike Harvey will share his love of wildlife photography. All 3 workshops are free and open to the public, but we ask that participants sign up in advance at the library desk.

It's back! Once again, we're playing Book Lover's BINGO at the library. Come in to pick up your BINGO card, then read books to match the categories between March 2 and April 17, 2009. Dr. Zhivago - Must See Movie

Looking for a little Russian romance? On Thursday, Feb. 19th, 2009, the Must See Movie program will present Dr. Zhivago. The movie will start at 1 pm. This classic film tells a tale of tragic love in the frozen Siberian steppes. Snacks will be provided, but filmgoers are encouraged to bring cushions for the chairs.

Cozy Saturday - Genealogy

There are still some slots available in Carolyn Steinbrink's Beginning Genealogy class, held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2009. This event kicks off our Cozy Saturdays series. Every Saturday in February, the library will offer a program designed to let you learn something as you while away the afternoon. Beginning Genealogy will show you how to start your family tree. Tax Forms and Info @ the library

Tax time is here again, and at the library we will do what we can to help you through it. We have the basic federal forms and the state long form on display. Many forms that we do not have on display we can print for you from the IRS website for $0.15/page. Check out the government links section of the Helpful links page for IRS websites and tax info. Librarians can't give tax advice, but we can give you forms, sympathy, and a smile.
