Books Sandwiched In & Must See Movie

This Thursday, July 15 at noon is the date for the monthly Books Sandwiched In meeting.  Bring your lunch and a few books you've been reading lately to share.  Then, at 1 pm, stay for the Must-See Movie - the patriotic musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy."  Hope to see you there!

Water Fun Day Wednesday

This Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 at 1 pm, the Children's summer reading program is holding a "water fun day."  We'll have sprinklers, wading pools, magnet fishing and water guns in the grassy lot behind the library.  Wear your swimsuit and come "Make a Splash" at your library!

Science Museum Wednesday

This week's kids' program is the Grout Science Museum.  At 1pm on Wed., July 7 in the library auditorium, they'll help you find out all about water, including the water cycle and what's REALLY in the water you drink.

Closed July 5

The library will be closed Monday, July 5, in honor of Independence Day.  We will reopen at our normal time on Tuesday, July 6.  Have a great and safe holiday!

Yu-GI-Oh today!

We're playing Yu-Gi-Oh! in the library auditorium from 4-5:30 today, July 2.  We'll provide the snacks, but bring your own deck.  We play by tournament rules.

Wednesday, June 30 at 4:30 the Shenandoah Public Library Board of Trustees and the Shenandoah Public Library Foundation Board will meet in joint session in the library auditorium to discuss the upcoming bond issue for the building project.

New! Text alerts

We've got a new option for notifying you about your reserves and soon-to-be-due books - text alerts, straight to your phone.  Simply give us your cell number and carrier name and we can set it up for you.  You can even set it up for yourself in the My Account section of the catalog.  Let us know if you have any questions about this new service.

Books Sandwiched In & Must-See Movie

It's time for our favorite Thursday of the month - June 17!  Books Sandwiched-In at noon will once again feature - all of you!  Bring whatever you've been reading lately and hear the buzz on the books everyone else is talking about.  Then, at a special time, 1:30 pm, we'll be showing Roman Holiday, the classic vacation comedy/romance starring Audrey Hepburn.  See you there!

Surprise! Rick Eugene,who is presenting the Magic show today at 1:00, is also offering a Magic class at 2:30 today, Wed., June 16. Kids ages 8 & up are welcome to attend. Space is limited to 30.

Chasing4Life coming Monday

Monday, June 7, 2010 - Chasing4Life will be coming to the Shenandoah Public Library to present two programs.  We invite the kids to come at 1:00pm to hear about severe weather adventures, and adults and teens can come at 2:00pm to hear about the harrowing experiences of this storm chasing team.  The programs are free and open to the public.  Call the library if you have any questions: 712-246-2315.

Sign a Letter of Support

You can help with the library addition!  We're applying for many grants to help fund our proposed new addition, but we need to prove to these organizations that our community is behind this project. We're asking any and all members of the community to sign letters of support. You can write your own, or print out this letter (in .pdf format), check off all the listed items, sign it, and bring it to the library. Thanks for your help.

AtoZ The USA & AtoZ World Cultures

New on our website, we have two new databases.  AtoZ The USA gives you all sorts of information on the 50 states, while AtoZ World Cultures puts the world at your fingertips, with great articles about 175 countries.  Visit the Online/Downloadable Content page for more details.

New on the website

We've made some additions and updates to the website.  Check out the Building Improvements Page to go to our upgraded photo gallery.  We've also added a downloadable letter of support to that page that you can sign and bring to the library.  On the Online/Downloadable Content page we have two new databases (AtoZ The USA & AtoZ World Cultures).

Summer Reading Programs

Starting June 1, bring your kids and teens in to sign up for the Summer Reading programs.  Kids age pre-school through going into 5th grade can join "Make a Splash at Your Library," where they'll keep a reading log and earn a book!  Teens going into 6th grade through 12th grade can join "Sink Into A Book," where they'll bring in books they've read to earn points and enter drawings for prizes.  Stop by the library to sign up or ask questions about either program!

Closed Memorial Day

The Shenandoah Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 31, 2010 in observance of Memorial Day.  We will reopen for normal hours on Tuesday, June 1.  The outdoor bookdrop is available for returns of books, but media items must be returned indoors during library hours.

Books Sandwiched In & Must-See Movie

Everyone is invited to the library on Thursday, May 20.  At noon, we'll have Books Sandwiched In, where you bring your lunch and we provide the coffee and a great speaker.  This month Mary Irvin will present The Camel Bookmobile by Masha Hamilton.  Then, at 1:00pm, stick around for our Must-See Movie - the classic romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story.  We'll provide the popcorn!

Baby Signing Class - Saturday at 10am

Megan Jones, instructor from Iowa School for the Deaf, will be presenting a workshop called "Baby Signing for Parents and Caregivers" at the Shenandoah Public Library Auditorium at 10am on Saturday, May 15.  Everyone is invited, no registration required.  The first 25 participants will receive a free board book.  Check with your employer - CE credit may be available for this class.  Call the library if you have any questions.

Dantastic Storytime

Friday, May 14 - 1 pm "Dantastic" Dan Wardell from IPTV will be in the children's department to present a storytime.  Kids of all ages are welcome to celebrate the launch of our "Raising Readers Corner."

Destination Fridays

This week, stop in at 4:30pm on Friday for our latest travelogue.  Bill LeVere will be sharing "Croatia & Slovenia - A Photographer's Paradise."  When the program is over, you'll get a coupon for a discount on your dinner at the Sanctuary that night.  Make the Shenandoah Public Library your destination this Friday!

Read with Rover - this week

For the kids - have your parents sign you up for a half-hour slot between 5-6 pm to "Read with Rover."  We'll have dogs with their handlers available for you to read out loud to on Mon. April 12, Tues. April 13, Thurs. April 15 and Fri. Food for Fines - all week

In celebration of National Library week, the Shenandoah Public Library is offering "Food for Fines" April 12-17.  For every donated item of non-perishable food, we'll take $1 off your fines - except for Ramen Noodles, which we'll accept as 5/$1.  Food for fines is not applicable toward the replacement fee for lost books.  All food we collect will go to the Shenandoah food pantry.

If you have questions about your Census 2010 form, this is the last week to have them answered at the Shenandoah Public Library.  Our Census Lady, Chris, will be in Thursday from 1-7pm and Friday 10am-1pm.  So hurry in to make sure that everyone gets counted!

Cozy Saturdays

Saturdays in February from 2-4 pm, the library is hosting workshops on a variety of hobbies. The first will be Tabletop Gardening, followed by Dominoes, Fabric Purses, and Wire & Beaded Jewelry. Books Sandwiched In & Must See Movie

Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, will be the first Books Sandwiched In and Must-See Movie of the new year. Dewey or Don't We

This year the Winter Reading Program for adults is called "Dewey or Don't We." Dewey readers will read non-fiction, while Don't we readers read fiction. Check out the Events page for all the details and to print out the form or stop by the library!

Magazine Giveway - Sat. Jan. 16

Come one, come all! The Shenandoah Public Library is giving away magazines from 2007 - free - on a first-come, first-serve basis. The doors to the library auditorium will open at 10 am on Saturday, January 16 and remain open until we close for the day at 6 pm. Up until Saturday, we are also accepting donations of magazines to give away - no more than 5 years old and no National Geographic or news magazines.
